Acupuncture with Dr. Natalie
Hi, everybody. I'm Dr. Teresa Strathman, and I am the owner of All Paws Animal Clinic. I am super excited to have Dr. Natalie here with us today. She is a veterinary provider within our area that provides an amazing service, and we're really excited to be able to offer that to you and your pets really soon. We feel we can help improve your pet's quality of life and longevity in several different ways, and pet acupuncture is definitely one of those areas that we want to be able to do that. So without further ado...
Introduction to Dr. Natalie
I graduated from the University of Florida in Gainesville with a degree in veterinary medicine. During my studies, I was exposed to acupuncture and integrative medicine. Dr. Shea, a professor of mine who founded Chi University, was instrumental in my journey as I obtained my certification in acupuncture there. This experience allowed me to witness firsthand the benefits and miracles this therapy can offer patients.
What is Acupuncture in Veterinary Medicine?
With acupuncture, we use thin sterile needles to stimulate different points on the body associated with increased densities of lymphatics, blood vessels, and nerve endings. This ancient Chinese medicine, over 3,000 years old, aims to restore balance within the body and between the body and its environment. When balance is disrupted, disease can occur.
What is Integrative Medicine?
Integrative medicine combines Eastern and Western medical principles to provide the best patient care. It is particularly useful for chronic conditions where traditional Western medications are not tolerated or effective. Acupuncture offers another tool in our medical toolbox, enhancing patient quality of life.
How Dr. Natalie Got Into Acupuncture
I took an integrative elective course and observed vets using acupuncture and other modalities like laser therapy. Witnessing the significant differences these treatments made, I was inspired to offer similar services, especially in areas lacking access to such therapies.
Common Cases for Acupuncture
Acupuncture is beneficial for older pets with mobility issues or arthritis, especially if traditional medications are not effective. It also aids in recovery from soft tissue injuries, such as a torn cruciate ligament. Dachshunds with back pain or herniated discs respond well to acupuncture. Less common conditions include chronic kidney disease in older cats and chronic GI issues like colitis.
Can You Tell Us A Rewarding Case Example?
A memorable case is Toby, a 14.5-year-old Beagle with a disc herniation condition. Initially paralyzed, Toby regained some mobility after traditional treatments but remained weak. After one acupuncture session, he improved significantly and has been successfully managed with herbal therapy for three years!
How Owners Can Help Their Pets with Acupuncture
Owners should be attentive to subtle symptoms and communicate any changes, especially those related to medication tolerance. Transparency helps us address issues promptly, improving long-term quality of life for pets.
